Memorial Union & Commons Renovation: Washburn University
Washburn UniversityThe Washburn Memorial Union project created a master plan for the renovation and planned addition to the existing facility. The vision was a vibrant student center that serves the needs of the students, faculty and staff. The master plan called for the remodel/renovation of all three floors, 41,053 square feet, and the addition of a prominent main entry tower on the east side of the building. The plan included new student activity offices and a remodeled entrance to the existing bookstore, both located in the lower level. The renovated main level includes remodeled ballroom space, the addition of a convenience store, copy/business center and a new food services office. The upper level has a new lounge and meeting room space.
The food service in the union, Stauffer Commons, was designed with a marketplace style in mind. Replacing a cafeteria-style eatery, the 15,695 square foot marketplace provides students with a variety of choices. Stauffer Commons includes five different serving stations: pizza, deli, home-style, stir fry, and a grill. Also included is a full service soup/salad bar, beverage area, and dessert island. As the main eatery on campus with a capacity of 250, three meals are available daily to all students, faculty, and visitors.
