Girard Public Library

Girard, Kansas

Built in 1906

The Girard, Kansas Public Library was built in 1906 with funding provided by the Carnegie Foundation. In the November 2000 general election, Girard's citizens voted to support a sales tax increase to permit renovation and an addition to the historic structure.

Renovation included measures designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act as well as general modernization. The addition included 8,800 square feet of new space, which tripled the size of the building overall. An accessible entrance and elevator joins the new and old structures. The addition was designed to reflect and complement the scale, massing, and style of the original without diluting its identity. Gardens at the new entrance and a children's courtyard further reinforce the distinct but linked identities of the new and old buildings.
